DIY Aromatherapy to Soothe Hot Flashes: Essential Oils that cool & calm
Fern Carbonell | JUL 29, 2025

Through my own experience with menopause, I’ve found some essential oils that offer real support, and it’s time to share them with you! The mix of these essential oils: clary sage, geranium and bergamot bring cool and calm relief to an overheated and tense body. Drop the oils in a diffuser and enjoy throughout the day. Scroll down for the blend.
These essential oils can help boost mood, calm stress and anxiety, improve sleep and soothe hot flashes. Be sure you buy pure, organic, essential oils and store them in a dark, cool place to maximize their life and therapeutic properties. Do a patch test with any essential oil to test for allergic reactions. I use products and essential oils from Living Libations because they are high-quality, organic and thoughtfully sourced and crafted.
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea)
Clary sage is a reliable essential oil for women’s wellness, known for its ability to ease menstrual cramps, mood swings, and even hot flashes. Its calming, and wonderfully grounding. Clary sage may help reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, making it a supportive ally during life’s more tender transitions. Diffuse it or dilute with a carrier oil* for topical use when you need a little extra grounding.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Geranium is a beautifully balancing oil, often used for emotional ease and skincare. It’s one of my personal favorites, with its sweet, rosy scent, it’s often used to ease mood swings, irritability, and tension, especially during hormonal shifts like perimenopause and menopause. Geranium is often used in skincare for its soothing and harmonizing effects on the skin. Diffuse it when you’re feeling off-center, or blend with a carrier oil* for a heart-soothing massage.
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
Bergamot brings a bright, citrusy lift with a hint of floral — like sunshine in a bottle. Known for its mood-boosting and stress-relieving properties, bergamot can help ease anxious thoughts and support emotional resilience. It gently uplifts without overstimulating, making it a favorite for managing low moods or hormonal blues. Dilute for topical use, but avoid sun exposure afterward, as it can increase sensitivity.
A combination of these oils is the perfect formula for easing hormonal symptoms so you can feel soothed and calmed by the pleasing aroma as it wafts through your space.
Fill your diffuser with filtered water, as instructed by the manufacturer
Add 4 drops of clary sage
Add 4 drops of geranium
Add 5 drops of bergamot
Turn on the diffuser and enjoy!
Feel free to adjust the amount of oil to your liking. I sometimes add a drop (or 2!) of patchouli oil because it’s one of my favorite scents that brings me go inward.
You’ll need a bottle with a spray mist that can hold more than 3 fluid ounces.
Pour 3 ounces (100ml) of rosewater into the bottle
Add 3 drops of clary sage
Add 3 drops of geranium
Add 4 drops of bergamot
Spritz away and enjoy!
*Some common carrier oils include jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, argan oil, coconut oil, avocado oil. As mentioned above, always do a patch test.
Disclaimer: Essential oils can be a supportive part of wellness, but they are not a substitute for medical care. Always dilute essential oils properly and do a patch test before topical use.
